Traces on the Tide

Traces on the Tides is a concept that explores the impact of time and change on specific places. I chose to focus this project on my hometown, Blackpool a place once celebrated as one of the UK’s most iconic seaside holiday destinations. Over the years, however, it has earned a very different reputation.

Growing up in Blackpool, I’ve witnessed its slow decline: fewer tourists and a noticeable loss of appreciation for what the town once had to offer. Areas that were once packed with visitors, no matter what the weather, now sit eerily empty, even when the sun shines. I felt compelled to create something that highlights this contrast, to draw attention to what’s being lost.

The Film and Publication both consist of the use of visuals from the 1900s and visuals taken by myself in 2025.

In this book, we explore the stark contrast between the town’s vibrant past and its quieter present by comparing historical photographs from the 1900s with images taken in 2025.

These visual comparisons reveal more than just the passage of time, they tell a story of changing habits and shifting economies of a town that was once at the heart of British holiday culture.

Through these pages, readers are invited to explore the town's transformation, reflecting on what was, what is, and what may still be for Blackpool’s future.
